Medical Students

UCLA San Fernando Valley sponsors multiple sub-internships for interested senior medical students in their fourth year. Medical students have the opportunity to work directly with Attending Psychiatrists and residents at the program’s training sites.

Applications for sub-internship rotations are handled directly through the David Geffen Medical School at UCLA’s  Office for Visiting Students and the department to which you are applying for your rotation. Please review requirements for each rotation at Olive View Medical Center and the Sepulveda VA as specified on UCLA’s website. For specific questions about any of the following rotations, please contact the appropriate Student Coordinator.

Outpatient (PACE) Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry at the Sepulveda VA

This advanced elective offers an introduction to the rapid assessment and effective management of psychiatric and behavioral problems experienced by patients with significant medical or surgical illness. Students are integral members of the C&L team and learn to apply a biopsychosocial approach to the evaluation of psychiatric problems in this setting (including mood disorders, psychosis, anxiety, cognition, substance abuse, and personality disorders). Management of these problems includes both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, such as supportive therapy, crisis intervention, cognitive-behavioral, and insight-oriented psychotherapy.

Psychosomatic Medicine/C&L Psychiatry at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center

The psychosomatic medicine service at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center provides inpatient psychiatric evaluations to the medical, surgical, pediatric, and OB/GYN departments. The scope of services includes psychiatric diagnostic evaluations using a biopsychosocial approach; management of agitation and behavioral problems; treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, and psychosis; capacity evaluations; and assisting primary medical teams applying for power 3200 and probate conservatorship.  The HIV psychiatry clinic provides biopsychosocial evaluations and treatment to patients with HIV/AIDS and co-morbid psychiatric disorders.  Students in this clinic also assess suicide risk in newly diagnosed HIV patients and provide psychoeducation and supportive therapy.

Inpatient Psychiatry at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center

This advanced elective continues the inpatient experience from the initial clerkship in psychiatry, allowing greater involvement in overall psychiatric inpatient care to the level of a sub-intern, as appropriate.  Management of one to two acutely mentally ill patients is encouraged with the one-on-one supervision of an attending psychiatrist, fostering an active learning environment.  The student also interacts with the inpatient support staff and the residents rotating through the inpatient service, providing a comprehensive and in-depth precursor to post-graduate training in psychiatry.
