Short & long term ambulatory care forms the core of the clinical experience during most of the residency program. During the second year of training, appropriate outpatients are selected for short and long term therapy. On subsequent rotations, new patients are added for outpatient therapy. The primary outpatient experience is conducted in the VA, San Fernando Mental Health Clinic, and CSUN Student Counseling Center. Residents are expected to maintain an ongoing continuity care medication group, and to follow psychiatric outpatients on both a long term therapy and short term therapy basis. This setting provides therapeutically diverse experiences including dynamically oriented insight therapy, cognitive/behavioral therapy, group and family therapy, crisis intervention, and time-limited therapies. CSUN Student Counseling Center, SFMHC, Chemical Dependency Clinics, Ambulatory Geropsychiatry, and the Day Hospital experiences complement and strengthen the Ambulatory Care focus.
